Back in 1982 the Board of Directors of MFCP established a program where by members could sell Classified Ads into other member publications. The program became known as the Iowa Classified Network (ICN). The idea was to have of the ICN members publish the ads free on a space available basis. An ICN member would be able to sell the ads and receive a commission.
Today the ICN has become the best advertising buy in the Midwest and has been renamed the Midwest Classified Network (MCN) to better represent our coverage area. MFCP has members in twelve states and the circulation of the network is constantly growing. As of January 1, 2008 the total MCN circulation was over 2.7 million households. The same basic idea is still in place, allowing MCN members to publish on a space available basis. Some MCN member papers do not run every ad – every week. They may elect to hold the ad until the next week, or if space does not permit, may not run it at all. MCN member papers may also have different restrictions on classified advertising and may not run some ads (example: Work from Home or Adoption). Research shows that the MCN ads run in at least 75% of the papers all the time and often the percentage is much higher. The MFCP headquarters quotes the circulation at 2.7 million households.
In January 2001, the MFCP Board of Directors raised the recommended rate of the “ALL ZONE” to $199.00 for 30 words or less. The rates for the three lesser zones (“Iowa Only”, “East Only” and “West Only”) remained $159.00 each, the same rate they were when they were created in 1998. The rate for each word over 30 also remained $2.00 per word (which is split 50/50 between the selling publication and MFCP). The selling publication keeps $70 for a classified going into the “All Zone” and $60 for each of the three lesser zones as commission.
MFCP receives the ads and sends them out to each of the MCN members for publication. The ads are sent my e-mail and fax every Wednesday.
